LTdL 2009: A PROOF THAT MALAYSIA IS NOT AFFECTED BY THE GLOBALIZATION CREDIT CRUNCH

The organizing of Le Tour de Langkawi 2009 (LTdL 2009) from 9th -15th February next year will be the proof that Malaysia is a country that will always be able to organize an international event regardless the fact that the world is facing the globalization credit crunch.

Executive Chairman LTdL 2009 who is also the President of Malaysia National Cycling Federation (MNCF), Abu Samah Abu Wahab, said that the elite 14th edition cycling tour will start from Putrajaya "the Malaysian Government administrative centre" commence by Malaysia National Cycling Federation (MNCF) once again given the trust by Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) to be the organizer of the event.

"Today we gather at the Ministry of Youth and Sports to witness the launch ceremony of the Le Tour de Langkawi 2009. The launch ceremony will be a proof that the Ministry of Youth and Sports is committed to get involve with all sports federation in the country to organize any sports event.

"I as the Executive Chairman and all the work force of the Le Tour de Langkawi 2009 would like to thank the Ministry of Youth and Sports especially the minister, Dato' Seri Ismail Sabri Yaacob who put to rest all the uncertainty and questions in our minds," he said during the launch ceremony of the LTdL 2009 at KBS today.

The launch ceremony of LTdL 2009 is officiated by the Youth and Sports Minister, Dato' Ismail Sabri Yaacob along with Deputy Head of Secretary (TSUK) (Operation) Ministry of Youth and Sports, Dato' Mohid Mohamad.

Present at the launch ceremony is Head of Operation of the LTdL 2009, Dato' Naim Mohamad and also officers of MNCF.

With that being said, Abu Samah has asked everyone to take a serious look and take heed of the failure of the American to organize the Tour of Georgia in 2009 and also the refusal of the management of Honda Japan to participate in the Formula One (F1) race next season.

"Malaysians is really lucky to have a government which is totally committed and has a serious outlook at the value of organizing an event of massive proportion as such as the Le Tour de Langkawi," he said.

Abu Samah also emphasized the LTdL 2009 will ensure a participation of 20 pro continental teams, continental teams, clubs and national teams as fit to its status as the biggest cycling tour out of Europe.

The cycling tour is a seven-stage race:
starting from Putrajaya to Senawang (stage one)
Senawang to Melaka (stage two)
Melaka to Melaka (stage 3)
Melaka to Bandar Baru Bangi (stage four)
Petaling Jaya to Genting Highlands (stage 5)
Batang Kali to Shah Alam (stage six)
and Criterium Kuala Lumpur (stage seven).

Apart from that, Abu Samah also emphasized that Malaysia will be represented by three teams, which are the National Team, MCF Team (continental team,) and Le Tua (club).

Up to now, preparation of the National Team and MCF Team has entered phase two with 50 percent of the program handled by the Head Coach, John Beasley along with the coach, Jamaluddin Omar, implemented brilliantly.

"I received the information that John already had a discussion with Jamaluddin. I have been told that John has given the trust to Jamaluddin to continue with all the programs," he said.

National Team and MCF Team will commence central training most probably in Genting Highlands as soon as possible.

A pochissimi giorni dalla partenza della corsa malese (a ricordarcelo il count-down che campeggia a destra sul sito ufficiela della corsa http://www.ltdl.com.my/), ecco delinearsi gli schieramenti delle varie squadre:

Bbox-Bouygues Telecom for Le Tour de Langkawi: Yukiya Arashiro (Jap), Giovanni Bernaudeau (Fra), Yohann Gène (Fra), Arnaud Labbe (Fra), Guillaume Le Floc’h (Fra), Johann Tschopp (Swi). Directeur sportif: Philippe Mauduit.

“We’ll go to Le Tour de Langkawi with the aim of winning GC”, Mauduit confirmed. “Johann Tschopp will be our natural captain. Considering his weight-power ratio, the climb of Genting Highlands will suit him more that Fraser’s Hill last year.” The Swiss climb was on his way to contest the stage win up to Fraser’s Hill in 2008 but he lost all his hopes due to a flat tyre with 2-km to go. “Our concern is the weather conditions that our European riders have had to face recently”, Mauduit mentioned. “The cold and the snow have affected the training of cyclists like Tschopp.” Shall the Europeans reach Malaysia with a bit of a lack of form compared to their initial plans, Bbox-Bouygues Telecom will be able to count on its super motivated Asian recruit.

Ag2r-La Mondiale for Le Tour de Langkawi: Aurélien Clerc (Swi), Guillaume Bonnafond (Fra), Julien Loubet (Fra), Nicolas Rousseau (Fra), Jean-Charles Sénac (Fra), Blaise Sonnery (Fra). Team manager: Arturas Kasputis.

Clerc: “My program is different this year”, he continued. “In 2008, I started racing in Australia with the Tour Down Under in January. This time around, Le Tour de Langkawi will be my first competition. However, the training camps have given me a good indication on my form and I’m confident that I’ll be able to perform again. I even want to perform more. There are more hills on the course this year and that could turn into my advantage. I was very happy to win the green jersey last time, I’d be even happier to win a stage or more next month.”

South Africa for Le Tour de Langkawi (Feb. 9-15): Jacques Janse van Rensburg, Johann Rabie, Ian McLeod, Jay Thompson, Jaco Venter, Christoff van Heerden.

South Africans Ryan Cox and David George have won Le Tour de Langkawi consecutively in 2005 and 2006. They might be followed on the record book this year by either Ian McLeod or Jacques Janse van Rensburg. “These two riders combined forces at the SA Championships in 2008 with Ian taking the win and the Elite title and Jacques taking 2nd and the U23 title”, recalled Barry Austin who is the national team manager these days. “They know each other really well.”

Fuji-Servetto for Le Tour de Langkawi: Hilton Clarke (Aus), William Walker (Aus), Juan José Cobo (Spa), Arkaitz Duran (Spa), Frederik Kessiakoff (Swe), Davide Vigano (Ita).

Apart from Walker, their Australian fast men, Fuji-Servetto will count on Juan José Cobo for the overall win. The Spaniard is now recognised as the winner of the queen stage of the Pyrénées in last year’s Tour de France following the disqualification of his team-mate at the time Leonardo Piepoli. A winner of the Pro Tour stage race Tour of the Basque country (plus two stage wins) in 2007, Cobo is a true specialist of the one-week long events. He’s capable of beating the South American climbers in Genting Highlands. “We have another card in our hands with Frederik Kessiakoff”, Crespi revealed. “I have motivated him in particular for this stage and that could be the overall result as well.”

Garmin-Slipstream for Le Tour de Langkawi (9-15 February): Lucas Euser (USA), Timothy Duggan (USA), Christian Meier (Can), Cameron Meyer (Aus), Chris Sutton (Aus), Ricardo Van der Velde (Ned).

Garmin might not line up their most famous riders at LTdL but they have chosen the most competitive ones at this time of the year. This applies to their two Australians Cameron Meyer and Chris Sutton who have raced the Tour Down Under prior to heading to Malaysia. “It’s a huge advantage for us to come from the Southern hemisphere compare to the Europeans”, Sutton commented, speaking from Adelaide. “Here during our summer we’re able to do a much better specific training.”
Sutton, 24, is a sprinter in the making. Already a five time winner as a pro in Europe, the former Cofidis rider targets Milan-San Remo and the Classics in April. It will be his first appearance at Le Tour de Langkawi. “I’ve always wanted to do it”, he said. “I’ve always enjoyed watching the pictures of cycling in Malaysia, even those of the riders under the pouring rain. I know it doesn’t often happen but it’s fun to see it. LTdL gives me the opportunity to stay longer under the warm weather this year before heading to Europe. I’ve also been inspired a few years ago by Graeme Brown’s stage wins.”

The Australian national team for Le Tour de Langkawi (February 9-15): Gene Bates, Jai Crawford, Richie Porte, Tim Roe, Adam Semple, Cameron Wurf.

“Our national team is a mix of experience and up-and-coming riders together with riders like Porte and Wurf in search of a contract in a big team”, Bannan underlined. The young ones are the very promising Tim Roe and Adam Semple while the old ones would be Gene Bates, 27, and Jai Crawford, 25. “We count on Bates’ long experience of Le Tour de Langkawi for the the leadership and we picked Crawford for his good history in Asian cycling. Bates came close to a stage win with LPR in 2007, Crawford finished 5th overall that same year. Crawford won stage 3 and finished 8th at the Tour of Wellington in New Zealand last week. It says a lot about his current physical condition.

Le Tua for Le Tour de Langkawi (February 9-15): Mohd. Razif Salleh (Mal), Ng Yong Li (Mal), Lim Yew Meng (Mal), Tonton Susanto (Ina), Samai (Ina), Jeremy Yates (N-Z).

“At Le Tour de Langkawi, I would like to go for the GC again this year but the team (LeTua) first priority is for a stage win for a Malaysian rider so I hope to contribute to that effort”, a very loyal Yates explained. Prior to signing for the Malaysian outfit, he collected very positive comments from Australia’s Bernhard Sulzberger who came 15th with LeTua at last year’s LTdL.

Mi sarebbe tanto piaciuto rivedere all'opera Savini in Malesia, dopo la gran prestazione dello scorso anno.

SHAH ALAM, 5th February - Le Tour de Langkawi will be held this year with no former overall winner on the start list. A new name will for sure appear in the history of the race when the Proton Yellow Jersey (Jersi Kuning) will be awarded at Dataran Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur on February 15.

Having switched from road racing to mountain biking, last year’s winner Ruslan Ivanov from Moldova will not come back. He’s no longer part of the roster of the Diquigiovanni-Androni team. Interestingly, another Moldovan will line up and this is the young Alexandre Pliushin, 21, from Ag2r-La Mondiale. He’s a champion in the making. After warming up at the Tour Down Under in Australia, he’s set to collect his first big result as a professional in Malaysia next week.

However, the hot favourites remain the members of the Venezuelan-registered Diquigiovanni-Androni team. Their six riders have already raced and performed together at the Tour of San Luis in Argentina while Le Tour de Langkawi will be the first race of the year for most of the participants. Twice a winner of the Genting stage (in 2006 and 2007), José Serpa from Colombia naturally takes place on top of the list of the potential winners of the 2009 LTdL.

“But we have a major problem”, team manager Gianni Savio explained. “As defending champions, we have the first numbers on the starting list and that means everybody will watch us. The question for us is: how to control the race? With a 6-men team, it’s not an easy task and many of our rivals are highly motivated to beat us. It will be very difficult. Even though the Genting stage suits the characteristics of our riders, before that there will be breakaways, counter attacks, etc.”

Happy with the return to Genting Highlands, Savio also welcomed the initiative of the organisers to adopt a 7-days format for the race. “As an early season race, it’s a very positive move to go for 7 days”, the Italian tactician explained. “It’s enough for setting a proper hierarchy into the field. In seven days, there’s no room for improvisation. The real best riders will have the opportunity to emerge.”

Diquigiovanni will face a strong opposition from the other Grand Tour teams. The new born Cervélo Test Team is coming with a strong contingent of climbers including José Angel Gomez Marchante who got a top-5 overall in the 2006 Tour of Spain and Irish sensation Philip Deignan who is no stranger to Malaysia but now returns with the experience of a 25 year old professional. After their train camp in Portugal, the members of the Swiss-based team are rumoured to be all in a very good shape.

Fuji-Servetto also brings an interesting duo likely to claim the overall win with climbers Juan José Cobo who is no less than the winner of the queen stage of the Pyrénées at Hautacam in last year’s Tour de France and mountain bike star Frederik Kessiakoff from Sweden. Bbox Bouygues Telecom is determined to bring their Swiss light man Johann Tschopp in the best position for the Genting stage after his first experience in Malaysia last year. He was on his way to winning at the top of Fraser’s Hill but was victim of a flat tyre in the front group with 2km to go. His directeur sportif Philippe Mauduit is adamant that Genting Highlands suits him even better than Fraser’s Hill.

At Le Tour de Langkawi, there’s always room for a surprise coming from young riders. Shouldn’t it be Pliushin, the revelation might well be South Africa’s Jacques Janse van Rensburg who has even used a marathon mountain bike race as a warm-up for LTdL. After his 4th place overall last year, New-Zealander Jeremy Yates aims at an even better result as he’ll be boosted by the immense support surrounding Le Tua, the Malaysian continental team he joined especially for this race. The Australian trio formed of Jai Crawford, Richie Porte and Cameron Wurf is also likely to disturb the dominance of the Grand Tour teams while Iran’s Ghader Mizbani hasn’t given up his hope to become the first Asian to win the overall classification of LTdL.

The 13 first overall winners of Le Tour de Langkawi:

1996: Damian McDonald (Aus/Giant-Australia)
1997: Luca Scinto (Ita/MG-Technogym)
1998: Gabriele Missaglia (Ita/Mapei)
1999: Paolo Lanfranchi (Ita/Mapei)
2000: Chris Horner (USA/Mercury)
2001: Paolo Lanfranchi (Ita/Mapei)
2002: Hernan Dario Munoz (Col/Colombia-Selle Italia)
2003: Tom Danielson (USA/Saturn)
2004: Freddy Gonzalez (Col/Colombia-Selle Italia)
2005: Ryan Cox (RSA/Barloworld)
2006: David George (RSA/South Africa national team)
2007: Anthony Charteau (Fra/Crédit Agricole)
2008: Ruslan Ivanov (Mda/Diquigiovanni)

(cs LTdL)

Seguiranno a breve i soliti servizi (articolo, fotogallery e video)
