ROUTE SUMMARY

STAGE ONE (Alor Star to Kulim)
130.0km

Alor Star, last visited in 2001, provides the backdrop for a stunning flag-off of LTdL 2008. From the state capital of Kedah, the mostly flat terrain sets the stage for several sprints as the peloton goes through the quaint town of Pokok Sena before meandering past the picturesque Naka and its spectacular tropical rainforests.
The Tour will stream past Jeniang and Kuala Ketil and the Bukit Hijau Recreational Park which is renowned for its awesome waterfall. As the stage draws to a close, fans could be in for one of the best finishes of the tour when the riders jostle for position down the last five kilometres before preparing for the ultimate sprint finish in Kulim which was the finish point for the second stage in 2007.

STAGE TWO (Tapah to Genting Highlands)
118.0km

The cyclists will be greeted by rows and rows of guava orchards as they make their way out of Tapah and on to Bidor. The pleasant start camouflages the otherwise difficult and crucial stage that lies ahead of them.
Going through Sungkai, famous for its whitewater rapids, it is very likely that the peloton will break into several parts ahead of the sprint stages in Sungkai itself, Tanjung Malim and Kuala Kubu Baru.
The historical landmark of Slim River, which had been the site of a major battle during World War II, will bear witness as to how the peloton will shape up before it heads into Proton City in Tanjong Malim. It is expected that the battle between climbers will begin before they reach Kuala Kubu Baru. As they draw closer to the highlands, the riders will begin to feel the heat of the Hors Class climb up the legendary Genting.

STAGE THREE (Lanchang to Cukai)
195.0km

The longest stage of LTdl 2008 will begin in Lanchang, a first-time host venue, that is located just outside the town of Temerloh – a transit point for ferries bound for Pekan or to Tasek Bera - and will provide the peloton with some relief from the punishing ride the previous day.
It will be a mixture of hilly and flat sectors especially at the Jabor interchange.
The peloton will pass through Maran famous for its Berkelah River and then on to Gambang and Pasir Gajah which is well known for the historical Masjid Jambi as it winds down to another sprint finish into Cukai.
Unlike the start venue, Cukai is no stranger to the LTdL and has hosted the finish thrice, in 2003, 2005 and 2006. On all three previous occasions, the venue played host on stage six.

STAGE FOUR (Kuantan to Kuala Rompin)
128.0km

After a strenuous ride the previous day, the riders will be delighted to take on the second shortest stage of LTdL 2008 which begins in Kuantan, a multi-time host of start and finishes. Unlike the past, there will be shift of the route towards the coastal roads.
From Kuantan, the peloton will make its way through the royal town of Pekan and on the coastal roads before heading southwards towards Johor Baru. This will be the first time the race will head further into the eastern portions of Johor. Along the way, the peloton will swing by Nenasi, known for its camping and beach activities, Merchong and the prawn breeding centre of Malaysia in Leban Chondong.
The wind factor could be an important consideration and the peloton may need to work together as they head towards Kuala Rompin.

STAGE FIVE (Kuala Rompin to Bandar Penawar)
185.7km

The second longest stage will pass through Tanjong Gemok or the "Fat Cape" to Mersing - the main ferry point for trips to the holiday island resorts of Pulau Tioman, voted one of the best islands in the world.
With at least a quarter of the stage run on flat terrain along the coastal roads, this will be the first time that the tour will pass through this part of the country. One of the towns to be visited is Jemaluang, the site of several forest reserves including sections of the Labis Forest Reserve, Endau Mas Forest Reserve (Johor) and Lesong Forest Reserve (Pahang).
Prior to reaching Bandar Penawar, the peloton will pass through Mawai – which locals believe was named after Mawas, the name given to a legendary large long-haired ape-like creature.
Several sprint stages will dot the landscape to provide the opportunity for breakaways and perhaps some surprise finishers at the podium.

STAGE SIX (Bandar Penawar to Johor Baru)
183.2km

After a tough ride in hot and humid conditions the previous day, the peloton will be in for yet another exhausting race on the third longest stage of the LTdL 2008.
From the starting point in Bandar Penawar, which is home to one of Malaysia’s elite sports schools, the tour will head for Telok Ramunia and Sedili, where offshore fishing is big business. The peloton will also pass through the town of Sungai Rengit, the hometown of Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, Minister for Youth and Sports.
Further down the stretch, they will reach Kota Tinggi – the location of the second sprint after the first one in Sedili – before preparing for a Category Four climb just before Ulu Tiram. The stage will be a mixture of flat and hilly terrain as the peloton pushes ahead into the city of Johor Baru, which last appeared in the race calendar in 2004.

STAGE SEVEN (Johor Baru to Batu Pahat)
128.0km

After pushing themselves to the edge in the previous two days, battling for honours on two of the longest stages of the LTdL 2008, there will be some respite for all the riders as they compete in the seventh stage, the second shortest leg of the race.
From Padang Merdeka just next to the Lido beach, the race will blast through Kulai, which is covered in plush greenery and also well known for its fully-supported horse riding stables. En route to Batu Pahat, the peloton will also encounter Simpang Renggam, a popular stop for travellers on the North-South Expressway.
The only hilly portion of the race will be in Batu Pahat where the Category Four climb could cause some upheavals in the GC. As it is a short race, the peloton will be pushing hard all the way to the end.

STAGE EIGHT (Melaka to Seremban)
150.0km

The historical city of Melaka, renowned for the structures and buildings that have been preserved from the Portuguese, Dutch and British era, will provide a truly memorable start to Stage Eight. Climbers who missed out on achieving a good result on Genting will have a second chance to prove themselves.
Last visited in 2006, Melaka will bid farewell to the riders who will then proceed towards Alor Gajah, also another well known historical site in the state. In the early 1800s, the Naning War was fought out here with local warrior Dato' Dol Said taking on the British.
A Category Two climb awaits cyclists at Bukit Putus near Tampin and by a lesser climb in Kuala Pilah before the peloton reaches Gemencheh, which has the Gunung Ledang forest, Rempah Park and Kesang Recreational Park on the outskirts.
From the picturesque and cool conditions along the parks, the peloton will head for a grand finish in Seremban.

STAGE NINE (Seremban to Kuala Lumpur)
153.8km

The last stage, with three intriguing climbs, also offers riders who are still in contention the chance for one final shot to deliver their best and aim for the various titles on offer.
Leaving Seremban behind, the riders will take the hilly road towards Kuala Lumpur. Mantin will mark the start of a long and winding stretch that will rise towards Lenggeng where the first of the climbs, a Category Three climb, awaits the riders.
This will be followed by a Category Two climb in Bukit Anak Tangga before the final assault up Bukit Peres (Category Three). With several sprint stages spread out over the route, breakaways will occur as the sprinters battle furiously to collect points before the end.
Once the peloton arrives in the nation’s capital, they will make three loops around Kuala Lumpur before the grand finish at the Sultan Abdul Aziz Building in Dataran Merdeka.

YONG LI DREAMS ON WITH MEITAN-HOMPO GDR IN LTdL 2008

Kuala Lumpur: His fourth straight presence in Le Tour de Langkawi (LTdL) 2008 already makes promising Malaysian Ng Yong Li stand out in the crowd of world class riders, as he has never competed in the race with the same team twice.
Having made his debut in Asia's biggest cycling event with the Proton T-Bikes team in 2005, the rider from Batu Pahat made a return with composite team Equipe Asia in 2006.
In the 12th edition of the race last year, Yong Li was riding historically as Malaysia's first ever professional cyclist with Portuguese team Vitoria-ASC.
This time around, he has signed for the Japanese Meitan-Hompo GDR, and believes he has a team that shares the same dream and ironically the same target - of earning a ride in the Tour de France by 2010.
The team features two of only three Asian stage winners in LTdL's history in brothers Shinichi and Koji Fukushima. But as the sole climber in all of the 12 riders in the team's roster for the 2007-2008 season, Yong Li has a bigger responsibility.
Known for his climbing ability, Yong Li almost secured a top 10 finish in the Cameron Highlands stage last year, having been positioned sixth in the penultimate climb leading to the finish.
A crash in the final three kilometres not only ruined his chances in that stage, in put him out of contention for the Asian riders' jersey.

Meitan-Hompo GDR is currently based at their regular pre-season training camp in Chiang Rai, Thailand and will be flying to Malaysia only shortly before the start of LTdL 2008 in Alor Star, Kedah on February 9.
The month spent there has given Yong Li the chance to get to know his new team, although he has raced against them on a number of occasions before.
"I've been told by the team manager Akira Asada that I've got a bigger responsibility with this team, not just in LTdL, but more importantly in the European calendar, where we'll spend most of our time this year," said 22-year old Yong Li.
"As I'm the only climber in the whole team, my plans will be for the mountain top finishes. What is more important is the team and I share the same aspirations. My target since I went to Europe in 2005, was to make it to the Tour de France by 2010. This team wants to be the first Asian team to do so in
2010, so we've gelled right from the beginning," added Yong Li, who started his career in the European peloton with Spanish team Wurth-Liberty Seguros in 2005.
"The first plan is to move up from continental to profesional continental team and the management are working hard on that. Once we've done that, we will earn some wildcard entries into Pro Tour races, then establish ourselves from there. So, since LTdL will be the first race of the year for me, I'll probably be heading there with 80 percent form and build up for the rest of the year from there."
This team, apart from Giant Asia, are the Asian teams never to be discounted in LTdL as they have proven twice that they are capable of winning stages - Koji did it in the Grik to Tanah Merah stage in 2005 and Shinichi in Stage Seven of the LTdL from Kuantan to Karak last year.

Koji is undoubtedly among the most popular riders each time he makes his way to LTdL. Playing the harmonica for fans and dishing out a few words of Bahasa Malaysia along the way are just part of his repertoire, marked mainly by his neverending eagerness to breakaway during the race.
They also come this year with a proven time-trialist in Thailand's Sea Games individual time trial gold medal winner Prajak Mahawong, while Japan's Takashi Miyazawa will again be the fast man the team counts on in bunch sprint finishes.
Taiwan's Wang Kyi is expected to make his debut in LTdL with the team and at just 19-years old, is expected to be the youngest rider in the field this year. Shinichi at 36-years old, is likely to be one of the oldest.

Equipe Asada (provisional line-up): Shinichi Fukushima (Jap), Koji Fukushima (Jap), Ng Yong Li (Mas), Prajak Mahawong (Tha), Takashi Miyazawa (Jap), Wang Kyi (Tai).
Meanwhile, a total of 25 teams will grace the 13th edition of the prestigious LTdL. With the increased participation and the return of the Pro Tour teams, combined with the support of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, who are the main organizers for the event next year, the LTdL 2008 is set to be the best ever since its inception in 1996.
The Tour is also sanctioned by the Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF), the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) and the Asian Cycling Confederation.
One of the major differences in the forthcoming Tour is the idea of taking it closer to the people. To achieve this, more events will be organised on the ground which means more carnival-like activities at all start and finish venues. One of the side events to be included will be cycling clinics.
One of the priorities for the Tour next year is to promote cycling at the grass root level. This will be done via the Rukun Tetangga and Kampung Baru programmes. One of the other key messages will be to encourage more Malaysians to take up cycling as a means to a healthier lifestyle.

FRASER’S HILL TO STAND IN FOR GENTING IN LTDL 2008

Kuala Lumpur – The Organizing Committee of the Le Tour de Langkawi 2008, with a heavy heart but in the interest of the safety of cyclists and members of the public, have decided to shift the Genting stage for this year’s Tour to Fraser’s Hill, another popular holiday destination in the country.

Minister of Youth and Sports, Datuk Sri Azalina Othman Said, has been informed of the latest development and has given her approval to the change of venue for the mountain stage challenge. The dates of the race remained unchanged from Feb 9 to 17.

Due to the Chinese New Year festivities during the first half of February, over 150,000 holiday-makers are expected to converge in Genting Highlands. “This is one of Genting’s busiest periods and the management informed us that it would be difficult to totally close the roads all the way too the peak as is usually done,” said Datuk Naim Mohamad, the Chief Operating Officer of the Le Tour de Langkawi.

“The Genting management proposed finishing the stage at Gohtong Jaya,” said Datuk Naim. “But the Organizing Committee felt that with such high volume of traffic trying to access the resort, it could lead to massive jams and worse still, safety issues.”

“And so in the interest of everyone, we felt the right thing to do would be to shift the climb to Fraser’s Hill,” he said. The technical team have surveyed the route to Fraser’s and have given the thumbs up.

Safety of riders is of utmost importance in a race with a Hors Classe tag like Le Tour de Langkawi. As such, the Organizing Committee is left with no choice but to resort to the change of venue

Although the Genting stage has been shifted, the company will continue to be a major sponsor of the Le Tour de Langkawi 2008. The prestigious King of the Mountain jersey and award will be sponsored by Resorts World.

“Genting is indeed very gracious and have agreed to continue being a sponsor for the Tour despite the circumstances. We would like to place on record our appreciation to Resorts World for being a loyal supporter and partner of the Tour,” said Datuk Naim today.

A total of 25 teams are slated for the 13th edition of the Tour. With the increased participation and the return of the Pro Tour teams, combined with the support of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, who are the main organizers, the 2008 Tour is set to be the best ever since its inception in 1996.

Battle of the sprinters

PETALING JAYA – With the first climb only on Stage 6, the Sprint Jersey, sponsored by Milo, is likely to get even more attention than usual in this year’s Le Tour de Langkawi from Feb 9 to 17. The Le Tour de Langkawi has made its trademark on being suitable for the sprinters in the past and with the climb coming in late, there will be a massive battle for the green right from the start.

Defending champion Alberto Loddo from Italy, who won five stages last year, will be back in action. He now rides for Tinkoff and is already a winner in 2008. On Jan 30, he won Stage 4 in the Tour of Qatar, outsprinting former world champion Tom Boonen who won the points competition at the Tour de France last year.

Loddo will undoubtedly have the same sensational form he had in 2007. However, he’ll face stronger opposition in the sprints at LTdL this time. The level of sprinters will be the highest ever seen in Malaysia with the return of Germany’s Danilo Hondo, who is a new signing for Serramenti PVC Diquigiovanni-Androni Giocattoli, following a two-year ban.

Hondo, a former stage winner at the Tour of Italy and the Tour of Spain, said: “I want to show that I’m still one of the best sprinters in the world.” The 34 years-old, who finished 2nd to Alessandro Petacchi in the 2005 Milan-San Remo and 2nd in the 2004 Paris-Tours, comes with an impressive 51 pro wins under his belt.

Watching a Loddo-Hondo duel sounds great but there will be more sprinters than the two of them on the start line in Alor Setar. CSF Group-Navigare had planned to line up their top sprinter Paride Grillo but he’s recovering from a car accident on New Year’s Eve and was replaced by Ruben Bongiorno from Argentina who is no stranger to LTdL, having won the final criterium of Dataran Merdeka twice already.

The other European teams coming with top sprinters are Crédit Agricole, with British veteran Jeremy Hunt, Bouygues Telecom with Aurélien Clerc of Switzerland and Rony Martias who is from the hot and humid Carribean island of Guadeloupe, Ag2r-La Mondiale with Belarus’ Alexandre Usov who got two 3rd placings in bunch sprints at the Tour of Spain last year.

With the globalization of cycling, sprinters now come from all over the world. Seoul’s Park Sung Baek ran 5th in the points competition of LTdL last year thanks to many regular finishes which included a 4th placing in stage 2 in Kulim.

Japan’s Takahashi Miyazawa with Meitan Hompo-GDR will have to be watched closely again as well as Russia’s Sergey Kudentsov from Trek-Marco Polo and Australian U-23 champion Simon Clarke from Southaustralia.com. South Africa has huge hopes in Nolan Hoffman, a sprinter from Cape Town who hasn’t lost many sprints in his country and knows what European cycling is about.

But the expectations for Malaysia are built around Anuar Manan, who rides for the LeTua Cycling Team. The 21-year-old from Kuala Terengganu has showed consistent progress since he made the top-10 in bunch sprints for his first participation at LTdL in 2007. In November, he has won a stage at the UCI 2.1 Tour of Hainan in China.

In January this year, he won three stages and the points competition overall in the UCI 2.2 Jelajah Malaysia where he actually never lost a single sprint, whether it was a hot spot sprint or a sprint for stage win. Not only him but the way his LeTua team led him out has impressed the foreign participants. “They rode just like a European team!”, said Irishman Paul Griffin from Giant-Asia.

Is Anuar able to beat the likes of Hondo? “I’ll give a try for sure”, he said. He’s still confident despite the accident he had on Jan 21 at training when a car hit him. He sustained a few broken teeth and a broken bike that was quickly replaced by a Time frame similar to what Tom Boonen was using when he became the world champion and the winner of the Tour of Flanders two year ago.

Because of Anuar’s sprinting and positioning abilities and his current form, Malaysia is probably the closest to a stage win at LTdL. And with support from other sprinters like Ahmad Haidar Anuwar and Sayuti Zahit, Malaysian cycling enthusiasts certainly have something to look forward to when the LTdL starts next week.

Meanwhile, LTdL COO, Datuk Naim Mohamad received the Milo-sponsored green jersey from Mr Ng Ping Loong from Nestle Products Sdn Bhd at a Press Conference held here today.

Milo will be sponsoring the Milo Bike Challenge at the start and finish venues. The bike challenge will comprise of several events like the Junior Sprint Challenge, Street Bike Challenge and the Bicycle Stunt Act.

This year, a total of 25 teams will grace the 13th edition of the prestigious LTdL.

One of the major differences in the Tour is the idea of taking it closer to the people. To achieve this, more events will be organised on the ground which means more carnival-like activities at all start and finish venues. One of the side events to be included will be cycling clinics.

One of the priorities for the Tour is to promote cycling at the grass root level. This will be done via the Rukun Tetangga and Kampung Baru programmes. One of the other key messages will be to encourage more Malaysians to take up cycling as a means to a healthier lifestyle.

Winners of the points competition in the past 10 LTdL:
2007: Alberto Loddo (Italy)
2006: Steffen Radochla (Germany)
2005: Graeme Brown (Australia)
2004: Gordon Fraser (Canada)
2003: Graeme Brown (Australia)
2002: Robert Hunter (South Africa)
2001: Paolo Bettini (Italy)
2000: Gordon Fraser (Canada)
1999: Graeme Miller (New Zealand)
1998: Fred Rodriguez (USA)

Salutatemi Alex...

Fateci sapere:
1) se vi piace l'idea;
2) se riuscite a visualizzarlo/scaricarlo velocemente;
3) se la qualità video/audio è soddisfacente;
